Going on a little further from our earlier blog 'Showing ‘Expertise’ in Your Field', you need to show some level of ‘expertise’ or knowledge in your field. Whatever field you are in, people, when they attend an event, your event, want to see and know that they are watching or listening to someone with knowledge and skill in their field.
It’s not just about knowledge and skill though; it’s also about your willingness to share that knowledge and skill with them. They want to know you’re there to help them. They don’t want someone who is just trying to sell them something without any thought of their needs.
Everyone needs a niche. It’s how they stand out from the crowd. When attending events around the world, you watch as audience members gravitate towards speakers who clearly have a niche and have honed their craft to become experts in their chosen field of craftsmanship.
So, you need some level of interest, enthusiasm and ability for the subject matter you are presenting. Regardless of your experience or expertise, talking about something you love and feel passionate about will always come across well to your audience. And if you give yourself time to prepare, research and practice your presentation, then it will show.
So how do you show your skills and knowledge? Well, there are many ways, You could (without revealing client details and information):
- use case studies of your work and what you have helped people achieve.
- show examples of work you have done.
- demonstrate a technique or skill which would help your audience.
The point is to give them something which makes them think ‘wow’ and know that they are watching or listening to someone who knows what they are doing and is good at it.
