Learning the Lingo

Learning the Lingo - ShareYaarNow

Each industry has its own lingo. So, for example, marketing to gamers will be different to marketing to, say, yoga enthusiasts.

There may be a few similarities in the marketing but each sector or industry has its own way of speaking. How gamers talk between themselves will be different to how DJs or Yoga teachers talk, when they talk ‘shop’. Each has their own slang.

Do you know what ‘First-person shooter’ (FPS) and ‘Role-playing game’ (RPG) refer to? They are terms used in eSports and the video games sector. These are terms you should know and understand (along with many others) if you are trying to market to gamers and the eSports industry.

If you don’t speak like them, they’ll know that you are an outsider and it will be harder to connect and engage with your target audience.

If you want to market to a particular industry or sector, you should learn as much as possible about it. If you take the effort to learn about the sector and its way of speaking, you will get further in your event marketing.

Find some way to immerse yourself in the sector you are interested in. Perhaps, join in some of the events in the industry to see how the hosts, speakers and audience speaks and interacts with each other.

Maybe, for your event, invite a speaker from a sector that you want to learn about.

Learn as much as you can and keep learning because some sectors continue to evolve, such as esports and gaming.
