Building Your Brand as a DJ



As a DJ, the competition is enormous to get your target audience to listen to your mixes.

We listen to a lot of DJ music on various platforms. Here are some ideas and observations on how you can build your brand as a DJ:

  • When posting your mixes on music streaming platforms, and there are plenty out there - each one has its own main geographical following - so marketing on the right platforms for you is important.
  • Also, people have their own preferences for which streaming platform they listen to. So, if you are doing live streams - again check where your target audience hangs out.
  • If you are live streaming, try to choose a time slot suitable to your audience. Weekends can get very crowded with many, many DJs going online, all vying for audience time.
  • Some live streaming platforms allow you to appoint a moderator who can greet your audience while you concentrate on your music.
  • Build an online presence. Create a website and/or social media profile for yourself, where you can post news about upcoming shows and events. You can also use it to post links to free downloads of your music, or even sell tickets or merchandize through the site.
  • Video content. People like viewing videos online. So, if you can get videos of yourself performing at the decks, even better.
  • If you play a niche musical genre, see which platforms and communities cater to this niche.
  • Many DJs now create their own brand of merchandize.
  • Create an email list for fans who want more information about upcoming events and releases from your label or management company. Send out newsletters regularly with updates about shows coming up and new music being released by you, your label or management company roster.

As with a lot of brand building, you should use every possible resource available to you to build a fan base and get more people interested in your music.
